TheC1esteraseinhibitorproteinisanormalconstituentofserumwhichfunctionsasaserineproteinaseinhibitoroftheserpinfamily.
TheC1esteraseinhibitorinhibitsthecomplementproteasesC1randC1s,aswellastheproteasesKallikrein,factorXIa,XIIaandplasminofthebloodclottingsystem.
TheconcentrationofC1esteraseinhibitorproteinisreducedto10-30%ofnormalinpatientswithangioedemasecondarytoC1esteraseinhibitordeficiency(85%ofpatientswithhereditaryangioedema(HAE));in15%ofpatientswithHAE,theconcentrationsoftheinhibitorproteinisnormalbutfunctionismarkedlyreduced.
