Calibratorsare lyophilizedandpreparedfrompooledhumancitratedplasmasupplementedwithdifferent concentrationsofapixaban.TheplasmacontainsstABIlizersbutnobactericideadditives.Itiscalibrated,usingananti-Xaassay,inng/mlagainstaninternalreferencestandardandinIU/mlagainsttheinternationalstandardforlowmolecularweightheparin(LMWH)inplasma.
Background:
Apixaban(Eliquis®)isanoraldirectfactorXainhibitordrug.Itisprescribedbyahealthcareproviderandcan:
- reducetheriskofbloodclotsandstrokeinindividuals whohavenonvalvularatrialfibrillation;
- treatdeepveinthrombosis(DVT)andpulmonaryembolism(PE);and
- reducetheriskofDVTandPEinindividuals afterhiporkneereplacementsurgery.
Inmostcases,apixabandoesnotrequireroutinemonitoring.IttypicallyprolongsclottingtestssuchasPT/INRandaPTTso,ifnecessary,itisbestmeasuredusingananti-Xachromogenicassay.Note thatthiscalibratorsetisforresearchuseonlyintheUSandCanada.
