- ItisthecarrierproteinforFactorVIIIinplasma;itformsacomplexandthusprotectsFactorVIIIfromearlyproteolyticdecomposition.
- Itactsasamediatorforplateletaggregationbyattachingitselftoplateletmembranereceptors(GPIbandGPlIb/IIIa)followingpreviousplateletactivation.
- Itplaysapartinprimaryhemostasisbyactingasamediatorbetweenadhesionedplateletsandthesubendothelium(lesionedvascularwall).ThevonWillebrandSyndrome(vWS)isthemostfrequentlyoccurringhemorrhagicdisease;itmaybehereditaryaswellasacquired,causedbyquantitativeorqualitativedefectsofthevWF.
